You are, of course, free to choose whichever piece(s) of music you feel moved to perform, but here are a few suggestions.

1) Amazing Grace by John Newton (note his last name)
This amazing hymn, originally composed in 1779, was referenced by President Obama during his visit with the parents of seven-year-old Grace McDonald, killed in the Newtown shooting. The family gave the President a painting of an owl Grace had created. He told them that he would always think of Grace when he heard this hymn.
2) Over the Rainbow by Harold Arlen (lyrics by E.Y Harburg)
This song was recorded by children from Sandy Hook elementary school after the shooting. Judy Garland, who made the song famous in The Wizard of Oz, said in interview, “Over the Rainbow has become part of my life. It’s so symbolic of everybody’s dreams and wishes that I’m sure that’s why some people get tears in their eyes when they hear it. I’ve sung it thousands of times and it’s still the song that’s closest to my heart.”
3) Newtown Peace Anthem by Julie Lyonn Lieberman
Publisher: Alfred Music Publishing
Newtown wants to be remembered as a center for transformation. Composed by a Newtown resident, this music is a heartfelt tribute to Newtown’s fallen angels and their families and more. It is a celebration of love over evil. There are two levels: Middle School and High School. Each level can be performed on its own, but the two levels also interlock for an all-school or all-community performance. Piano part included. The free downloadable performance video is designed to work best with this piece of music.
